Looking for a Cheap and Fun Date Night?

I was hanging out with my daughter and I proudly proclaimed, “Look at my hair. All I did was brush it today.” She, being a mom raising little ones replied, “Oh yeah, well I didn’t even brush mine today!”

Life can get pretty crazy in the season of raising kids. In that unpredictable time of diapers and spilled milk and “can we afford to go out and hire a babysitter?”—I started a cheap date night thing that you might want to try. We loved it and you might, too.

Do you want romance? Create it.

When my children were young, and hubby and I needed some adult time, I started a family favorite and called it—Hot Dog Night

The reason we called it Hot Dog Night is because our kids got hot dogs and Mom and Dad got a fancy adult dinner and a night together while they were asleep—if all went as planned.

This is how I pulled it off…

I’d move the kids schedule up and made it seem like it was later than it actually was. To make this work, you’ve got to tire the little rascals out: a visit to the park or a running game or whatever.

As the schedule got moved forward dinner came early. They got all of their favorites: Hot dogs with a side finger food, a fun drink, and a dessert.

Then, it was movie night in the dark. After the movie…It was bedtime! Early. So early, that it gave me enough time to make myself look like a woman again after playdough and the park and cleaning up messes all day.

I’d fix a candlelight dinner, pulled rose peddles from our backyard, and pretended I was a princess awaiting her prince. Too much? Okay, but you get the picture. The rest of the evening was adults only while our beautiful children slept.

It was a far cry from the screams of “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” and a dog that had been painted with cream cheese. Time to bring back some passion after scrapping off all the glue from my coffee table. Cue, I Feel Like A Woman by Shania Twain.

Hot Dog Night was a big hit at our house. Everyone was happy. Everyone. Especially me and my hubby.

“His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, this is my friend…”

-Song of Songs 5:15 (NIV)

How are you doing? When was the last time you had a date night? Can’t find a babysitter or don’t want to hassle the crowds? Try a date night at home. Whether you have kids or not a romantic evening at home is always fun.

Nurture your relationship. Nurture you. Those kids will leave one day, hopefully, and then, you can enjoy your spouse all the time. But until then, remember to take time for romance.

You are worth it.

Sending your child off with an example of a healthy marriage, and one which honors God, is one of the best gifts you can give.

It’s never too late to work on your marriage and make it a priority. Love your kids by loving your spouse.
