In the Hot Seat

We had a heat wave here in Southern California last week. In the middle of the week, we heard a loud POP. Our air conditioning unit was done. D.O.N.E. It had served us well for over thirty years. So, I’m not complaining.

By Thursday, my husband had multiple guys in our home for quotes on a new air-conditioning unit.

By Saturday afternoon, our air conditioning was working better than ever.

On instillation day, we had a wonderful conversation with the owner of the company. Turns out, we knew him from church.

We talked about kids and family and faith.

He said something that really resonated with me…

Being a very busy business man, who’s also involved in church, he sets his family and kids on his calendar like he does installation appointments.

In other words, his family gets the attention his customers do…and more.

If one of the kids has a ball game, it goes on the appointment calendar.

If he has plans for lunch with his wife, it goes on the appointment calendar.

If he has a family event, it goes on the appointment calendar.

When he has an appointment, whether business or family, he says, “I have an appointment,” and sticks to the schedule.

Have you been feeling like your family doesn’t get the time they deserve?

How about making calendar appointments for your most important people?

I’m reminded of the Cats in the Cradle song from 1974 by Harry Chapin…

In the song, the dad doesn’t have time for his son, and when his son grows up, the son doesn’t have time for his father.

There will come a day, when you’re older and can slow down a bit, and you’ll want to spend more time with your family.

If we are diligent about our time with our loved ones, when they’re older, they’ll still want to spend time with us.

What you put in, is what will come back.

Look at your calendar for this week…

Are there dates on there for the most important people in your life?

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

-Luke 6:38
