The Day After Mother’s Day: Honoring Moms

It’s no wonder there’s no Kids’ Day because it seems every day is kids’ day. If you’re a mom you’re probably nodding right now. We put a lot of stock in taking one day—one day—out of the year to honor our mothers. Can we really do that in just one day?

As I reflect on this “one day” I realize what brings me honor may be unusual. Or maybe not.

I feel honor when I feel proud.

As I watch my own daughter loving her kids well, I feel honored.

When I see her having fun with and laughing with her kids, I feel honored.

When I see them going to her for comfort, encouragement, and help, I feel honored.

As I watch my daughter-in-law tenderly caring for her boys and loving them well, I feel honored.

When she sends pictures of the boys being loved by their dad, I feel honored.

When she takes care of her family in a way which leaves me no doubt about the unselfish love that is growing and consuming their home, I feel honored.

When my grandkids come over on Mother’s Day calling it Grandma’s Day, I feel honored.

When my three-year-old granddaughter announces, “I peed in your pool!” times two. I feel honored.

When my family stays past my bedtime, I feel honored.

How about you?

What gives you the feelings of being honored?

What is it we all are looking for on this one day?

To some it all up, I’d say, appreciation. We moms just want to feel appreciated. We want to feel like we are making a difference with our family. We want to know our presence brings joy and love and faith. We want to know that love—God’s love—will be passed on from generation to generation.

Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

– Proverbs 31:28-31
