All I Want for Christmas

Irma, Helen, Rosa, Lorraine, and Claire were sitting outside enjoying the fresh air and friendly conversation. As residents of the Sunshine Retirement community, they loved sharing stories about family, community gossip, and adventures they’d all like to take for the upcoming year. These elderly ladies had two things in common: they all had son’s and grandchildren, which was often their favorite of all their topics.

Irma jumped right in with her recent update about her son. “Ladies, Daniel won another case. His practice as an attorney has been flourishing, and he’s so busy with new clients.”

Helen, not wanting to be outdone chimed in: “Oh, my Ronald just got promoted to Chief of Staff at his hospital. Knowing he’s a doctor brings me so much joy knowing he’s helping so many people.”

Rosa couldn’t wait to jump in the conversation, “Steven just had an article written about him in the New York Times. I still can’t believe that my boy is a governor! The article details the improvements he’s made. Let me read it to you…” Rosa pulls the article from her purse and reads it with pride.

“I have pictures!” Lorraine announces. She proudly shares pictures of the new building her son, James, has designed as an architect. “James recently shared about his travels and designs with my granddaughter’s class. The kids loved him!”

Suddenly they were all silent as they looked at Claire. At first, Claire didn’t say anything. She had been daydreaming about her plans for that day—plans she frequently had and looked forward to. She was very happy for her friends and the success of their sons and told them as much.

Then a car pulled up from around the corner. It was an older Rav4. The car stopped in front of the ladies.

Claire leaped to her feet.

“Here’s my son, Jake! I’m spending the day with them.”

In the car was Jake, Jake’s wife, Ann, and their two kids in the back seat, Allie and Theo.

Jake got out of the car and gave his mom a hug and warmly greeted all the ladies. He opened the backseat car door. Screams of “Grandma!” could be heard.

Claire declared, “My babies!” as she climbed in over Allie to sit in the middle seat.

The car pulled away and all the other ladies were now without words.

All I want for Christmas is time with my family and loved ones.

What do you want for Christmas this year?

As you prepare for all the festivities, remember what’s most important.

As you wrap the many gifts, remember what’s most important.

As you attend or not attend the holiday parties, remember what’s most important.

As you cook, bake, and roast, remember what’s most important.

As you decorate, and buy more tinsel, remember what’s most important.

Take time to sit and sip coffee or tea or hot chocolate and listen.

Take time to love.

Take time to spend time with our King and Savior.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” – 1 John 3:18

“The angel said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is honoring you. Look! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.” – Luke 1:30-31
