A Beautiful Love Story

I love a good love story. Don’t you?

Sometimes we find love under unusual circumstances and when we least expect it. Rick (not his real name) was hit by the pandemic with a blast—having multiple medical issues caused him to be hyper vigilant. Being housebound he had almost given up on finding a possible spouse—something he had longed for since college. Well into his career it felt like love may not be in the cards for him.

Nonetheless, he gave online dating a try.

During the long hours of quarantine he began interacting with, we’ll call her, Emily. Rick and Emily interacted often online which turned into talking daily. They seemed to really hit it off. After months of “dating” they decided it was time for a social distance person-to-person date.

The only contact and information Rick and Emily had were each other’s phone numbers and dating app info.

On the morning they were to meet up Rick was extremely excited and eager to finally meet Emily. They agreed Rick would pick up breakfast and coffee and meet Emily at her home.

Rick first stopped for flowers, then got breakfast, and lastly stopped at a Starbucks for coffee. As he got back to his car to drive to Emily’s house he realized his cell phone was missing.

Frantic he looked all around the parking lot. He looked inside his car. And checked and checked his pockets.

No phone.

As the flowers wilted, his heart wilted with them.

The only info Rick had about Emily was on the missing phone. Her phone number was on his phone and her address was also on his phone.

His heart lowered to his stomach and his anxiety raced.

As the coffee and breakfast got cold, Rick came up with an idea. He would go purchase a new phone and retrieve the information.

Rick found the nearest store where he could purchase a new phone. As the phone was being charged up—he was hours late for his date—and realized the info from his old phone would not be retrievable. Just then his new phone rang. Rick instructed the salesclerk to stop charging his phone so he could answer it.

Yes, it was Emily. She was wondering what was taking him so long.

As you’ve probably already figured out Rick explained what had happened and their date was back on. Breakfast turned into a late lunch.

One thing led to another, and this couple will be walking down the forever-until-death-do-us-part aisle.

What would have happened if Emily got angry and thought, “What a jerk! He stood me up. That’s it, I’m never talking to him again!”?

What would have happened if Rick didn’t think quick and purchase a new phone? What if he said, “Oh well,” and went home?

Emily thought the best of Rick and called him.

Rick thought enough of Emily to do whatever he needed to try and make that date happen.

Oftentimes in relationships we fail to give the other the benefit of the doubt. If only we could stop when we feel irritated or disappointed and say:

-They love me.

-They are not trying to hurt me.

-They are doing the best they can.

-They want good for me.

-They want to please me.

Let’s us always remember…

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

-1 Corinthians 13:4-5

And practice…

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

-Ephesians 4:2

And if you’re wondering about what happened to Rick’s phone…He later found it at a fast-food restaurant. One of the employees picked it up in the parking lot but it had been run over.

Don’t let anything or anybody “run over” your love story.
