Why Is There So Much Evil in the World?

This is the question many of us are asking. More now than ever.

As a kid my dad taught me that “bad things” were random. Evil is here and “stuff” just happens. I’d ask, “What about God?” Dad would say, “If there was a God why does he allow babies to die and cancer and plane crashes?”

This was Dad’s number one reason he was an atheist. His rationality took me into my adulthood believing the same.

Then…

Jesus happened.

At a point in my life God revealed Himself to me in an undeniable way. I went from total unbelief in a Father God to believing with my whole heart that Jesus was real and that God raised him from the dead and that Jesus died for my sins. I moved this from “knowing in my head” to believing in my heart and crowned Him Lord and Savior of my life.

But wrestling with evil didn’t stop there. We hear of tragedy and we question why there is so much evil. Why do bad things happen to good people?

All I know for sure is what God says…

These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.  -John 16:33

God is greater than all evil.

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.  -1 John 1:5

God is love and light.

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.  -1 John 3:16

Jesus died a horrible and gruesome death for us.

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.  -1 John 4:4

As a believer in Christ and God’s child we have a power which is unfathomable.

And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”  -Revelation 21:4-5

At some point God will make all things new and all things good where love leads.

We will never fully understand the evil in this world on this side of eternity, but when we see God face-to-face all things will be revealed.
