Same-Sex Divorce

With same-sex marriage comes same-sex divorce. Divorce is one of the ugliest sides of marriage. We’ve all experienced the pain of divorce in some way. Maybe your parents split up. Maybe you’ve experienced the destruction of your own marriage. Maybe you’ve had to watch your child go through the ugliness of divorce.

Divorce is painful.

Now that our country has legalized same-sex marriage I am wondering if same-sex divorce rates will be higher or lower than heterosexual divorce rates. Have you considered this? I can’t be the only one thinking about this stuff, right?

Anyone who is married knows marriage can be extremely difficult. Joining your life with another, and putting away your selfishness, in order to create unity and oneness can be grueling. How many people do you know who have happy marriages? How many of those couples are Christ followers? The church needs to be the place where marriage thrives with exceptional health and contentment. Don’t you agree?

Do you believe marriage to be holy, sanctified, and created by God?

For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great.

~Ephesians 5:31-32

If we represent Christ, and believe in biblical marriage, we need to focus first on our own marriage. Treat your marriage as holy and ordained by God.

Let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.

~Ephesians 5: 33

If you believe marriage to be holy, sanctified, and ordained by God treat it as such.

  • Proverbs 31:12 says, “She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Ladies, this mean with our words too. Don’t speak ill of your beloved. Not only that, don’t listen to people who do speak ill of their spouse. I cringe every time I hear a woman complain about her husband. Even in a joking way. Don’t do it! Ever!
  • Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.” Men, I know we women can be quite frustrating at times. I know I am! My husband was handed an extra dose of patience and grace, which I get to be the recipient of. Tell her she’s beautiful. Be kind and gentle with her. Understand she needs your love and understanding. She yearns to be cherished. Everyday.
  • Treat each other like the most important person in the whole world. Remember back to when you were dating. Do you still treat your spouse the way you did then? Make a holy decision today to treat your LOVE even better than when you were dating.
  • If you are single don’t give your married friends an ear to complain about their husband or wife.

Nothing would speak louder than a ZERO divorce rate in the church among people who claim to be Christ followers. Take a stand for marriage by pouring into your own marriage and investing into those who may be struggling.

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

~Colossians 3:14

Be an example of grace. Focus on loving others.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

~John 4:7
