NOT Halloween

Yes, I know today is Halloween, but that’s not what I want to talk about today. During Sunday services our pastor referenced the upcoming holiday as Taco Tuesday. It made me laugh. There are certain holidays which have the potential to take us away from focusing on God and our faith. I want to do the exact opposite. Today, Taco Tuesday, I want my focus to be on God and his goodness and his faithfulness.

Recently, I’ve been through a dry spell in my life. Dry as in, filled with illness, disappointment, struggles, and fear. During “dry spells” it’s easy to fall into despair. It becomes easy to question God. Question what he’s doing. Question if he sees us. Question if he will change our circumstances. One day turned into two, which turned into three, and then, days turned into weeks. “God, don’t you see me?” Which really asks, “God, why aren’t you doing what I want?”

Sometimes God seems silent. But oftentimes, it’s in his silence he is doing his greatest work in us. It’s during the silent spells where he’s molding and changing us, making us stronger and more usable for his kingdom.

In Job 38:4-5 God said, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?”

It’s not for us to question what God is doing. It’s our job to trust.

Have you ever prayed,

“Lord, use me,”

“Please God, choose me,”

“God, make me what you want me to be”?

It’s in those prayers where God goes to work sculpting. In sculpting, a quietness can occur. A quietness which can feel unbearable and excruciating as God chips away at our rough edges. It’s in the apparent darkness which then generates the path for light. Once light shines through we know it’s God who’s been at work.

This transpired for me.

In the small kindnesses of others God reached my longing heart and sent his message loud and clear.

I see you.

I hear you.

I haven’t forgotten you, my child.

I have been guiding your path along your dark road.

Trusting God means we will not always understand the path along our way. We won’t have all the answers—even though we desperately want them. Life can be so hard and painful at times. Life can feel callous and cruel. It’s in those times where trust and faith are most crucial.

Are you experiencing a rocky marriage?

Do you have a wayward child?

Is loneliness creeping in?

Do you fear your broken heart will never be fixed?

Trust God through the darkness knowing he’s molding, sculpting, and guiding your path.

He sees you.

He hears you.

He hasn’t forgotten you, dear one.

He’s guiding you along your blurred road.

On this Taco Tuesday, focus on the one who laid the earth’s foundation and gives us life and breath. And always remember when we offer even small kindnesses we are being the very hand of God.

Fondly,

Lu

  1. Thanks for sharing this. Time with God and dependence on Him is the only way to be truly satisfied, in good times or bad.

  2. I am late in reading to this great message but God knew I needed to read it tonight and not on Taco Tuesday. :} Thank you Lu for letting God use you in such a gifted way. You always touch my heart with the Lords help.
